One of the great ways to Bible study is by doing word studies in Young's Concordance which is actually somewhat of a Bible in disguise. Young's Concordance got a bad rap through the years from religious leaders many of whom like to use enticing words of men's wisdom irregardless of the truth of the matter, so they say: "Young's is for the young, and Strong's is for the strong."
Actually Young's Concordance has become impoverished most likely from the lack of sales such propaganda generated, and its latest press runs are much less than what they used to be. Shop for a used Young's Concordance in a religious book store and you might find one of the jewels of old.
The advantage in using Young's is its categorizing of the Greek and Hebrew right on the page you are studying, so you don't have to go to back of the book as Strong's requires which is tedious and unfruitful. What Strong's offers in the back of its concordance is a supermarket of man's opinions of what Bible words mean. Those may be close but precise definitions of words in the Bible are necessary to understand it.
In using Young's the verses for each Greek or Hebrew word are gathered on the page right in front of you with an idea of their meaning. The more precise meaning is tucked away in the Word of God itself for those who want to understand the Bible perfectly. Here's what you do:
Open your Young's Concordance to a word like "gates." Read each verse as much as is there on the page as an appetizer and if you have a healthy hunger for the Word of God, you'll soon find yourself flipping through the pages of your Bible to look up certain verses that have gotten your attention.
In looking up the word "gates" we find: "THE LORD LOVES THE GATES OF ZION MORE THAN ALL OF THE DWELLINGS OF JACOB. GLORIOUS THINGS ARE SPOKEN OF YOU O CITY OF GOD. SELAH. Pslam 87:1/3 Now, you've found something of God's priorities and should be curious. What is it that God loves about the gates of Zion? Why does he deck them out with jewels in New Jerusalem which comes down from heaven at the end of the Millenium Age?
A careful study of the Old Testament indicates that Israel had a custom of the rulers of a city situating themselves in the gates of the city to administer judgment and justice and manage city business. So we look at a few more Scriptures under "gates" in the Concordance of your choice and lo and behold, we find: "AND THE GATES OF THE CITY SHALL BE AFTER THE NAMES OF THE TRIBES OF ISRAEL." Ezekiel 48:31 Connect that prophecy to Jesus telling the apostles each one of them would judge one of the tribes of Israel and we can expect each tribe to use the gate named after their tribe where they might encounter their apostle in their designated gate during THE THOUSAND YEAR REIGN OF CHRIST.
Let's just consider who might use which gate in THE THOUSAND YEAR REIGN and then you can open your concordance to the word "gate" and continue this study if you're interested in learning more:
Once again, you might want to open both your King James Bible and your Young's concordance if you have a copy. Open to the word "power" in your King James compatable concordance and begin looking up each verse pertaining to the Greek word "dunamis" in the New Testament. Many will try to define "dunamis" POWER in a word, but we are going to define the Biblical meaning of "dunamis" POWER without leaning on their understanding nor by consulting footnotes in any Bible, advice in the Concordance, nor what any dictionary or encyclopedia has to say. To our amazement we are going to find out the Bible defines itself.
First of all, there is clear evidence the Devil who is referred to as THE DRAGON in Revelation 13:2 has "dunamis" POWER he can give to THE BEAST, Antichrist. "AND THE DRAGON GAVE HIM HIS POWER, AND HIS SEAT, AND GREAT AUTHORITY."
You may remember Pharoah's magicians were able to duplicate some of the miracles Moses and Aaron worked in the presence of the evil dictator throwing their rods down and turning them into snakes too, but the snake of Moses and Aaron swallowed their snakes; indicating to us the greater "dunamis" POWER rests with God and not with Satan.
We are told: "AND WHAT IS THE EXCEEDING GREATNESS OF HIS (GOD'S) POWER TO US-WARD WHO BELIEVE, ACCORDING TOTHE WORKING OF HIS MIGHTY POWER, WHICH HE WROUGHT IN CHRIST, WHEN HE RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD, AND SET HIM AT HIS OWN RIGHT HAND IN THE HEAVENLY PLACES, FAR ABOVE ALL PRINCIPALITY, AND (EXOUSIA) POWER, AND MIGHT, AND DOMINION, AND EVERY NAME THAT IS NAMED, NOT ONLY IN THIS WORLD, BUT ALSO IN THAT WHICH IS TO COME:" Ephesians 1:19:20
God Almighty is the source of our Lord's "dunamis" POWER and his "exousia" POWER. The word power is used to express the meaning of "dunamis" and "exousia" in the Greek texts. We are discovering "dunamis" is the actual power.
The Scriptures have established that both God and Satan possess "dunamis" POWER, though we know God's power is greater than that of the Devil.
"THERE IS NO POWER BUT OF GOD. THE POWERS THAT BE ARE ORDAINED OF GOD." Romans 13:1b God is the source of all power. Lucifer, the fallen angel of light known as the Devil, obtained his power from God and corrupted it wickedly. His power is reduced to nothing more than permission to act by the fact God can stop anything he does. When the dragon casts a flood upon Israel to kill them during the final slaughter, "THE EARTH OPENED HER MOUTH AND SWALLOWED UP THE FLOOD, WHICH THE DRAGON CAST OUT OF HIS MOUTH." Revelation 12:16
The "dunamis" POWER that really matters is that which is with the living God and Christ his Son which we discover operates upon holy men who are filled with his Spirit. This is the two fold anointing Elisha asked Elijah for.
Saint Paul wrote speaking of the mysteries of God wrote: "MOST GLADLY THEREFORE WILL I RATHER GLORY IN MY INFIRMITIES, THAT THE ("dunamis") POWER OF CHRIST MAY REST UPON ME." 2 Corinthians 12:9
We search a little further and find the"dunamis" POWER of God working in his Saints at Ephesus: That God would grant them "ACCORDING TO THE RICHES OF HIS GLORY, TO BE STRENGTHENED WITH MIGHT BY HIS SPIRIT IN THE INNER MAN: THAT CHRIST MAY DWELL IN (THEIR) HEARTS BY FAITH; THAT (THEY) BEING ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN LOVE, MAY BE ABLE TO COMPREHEND WITH ALL SAINTS WHAT IS THE BREADTH, AND LENGTH, AND DEPTH, AND HEIGHT; AND TO KNOW THE LOVE OF CHRIST, WHICH PASSES KNOWLEDGE, THAT (THEY) MIGHT BE FILLED WITH ALL THE FULLNESS OF GOD."
What is the definition of "dunamis" POWER after considering all these sacred Scriptures and more besides? ALL "Dunamis" POWER IS OF GOD, and he would work his POWER through Christ and all his holy Saints to DESTROY THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL who also has "dunamis" POWER. We are literally at war in this world if we are awakened to reality in the Spirit and POWER of Christ.
Trust nothing man has to say in footnotes in the many versions of the Bible and Concordances. The Word of God defines itself. Why should you consult man's knowledge when God has provided you with his Word?
In the Young's Concordance, we find a feeble often repeated in the pulpits of the land, attempt at defining an apostle as "one sent forth." Of course the apostles were sent forth. They were sent forth as disciples when they were not apostles, therefore we know a disciple is also "one sent forth." Likewise, all the Prophets, (Ezekiel 3:5) Pastors/teachers, Evangelists and Miracle workers named in the Bible were "sent." That's what it means toWALK IN THE SPIRIT. The angels are also "sent." Daniel 10:11, Hebrews 1:1:14
But what distinquishes an Apostle from all the other holy men and women in the Bible is their rank. Some of the Prophets worked more sensational supernatural miracles than the Apostles, and some of them will be among the twenty four elders wearing crowns of gold at THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRIST, but there are only twelve Apostles; and they will each judge a specific tribe of Israel while the twelve prophets from among the twenty four elders will judge the nations.
Jesus made this very clear to the Apostles when Peter asked the Lord: "BEHOLD, WE HAVE FORSAKEN ALL, AND FOLLOWED YOU; WHAT SHALL WE HAVE THEREFORE?
And Jesus said unto them, 'VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT YOU WHICH HAVE FOLLOWED ME IN THE REGENERATION WHEN THE SON OF MAN SHALL SIT IN THE THRONE OF HIS GLORY, YOU ALSO SHALL SIT UPON TWELVE THRONES, JUDGING THE TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL." Saint Matthew 19:27/28
If we are to define an Apostle, we need to recognize there are no more apostleships remaining. Those twelve thrones are already filled at THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRIST. All those throughout the centuries who have called themselves apostles are seriously mistaken to do so.
The twelve Apostles are devout and obedient servants of God who were one with Him in the supernatural power of Christ. Yes, they were sent like all holy men and women are sent or led by the Spirit continually, (Isaiah 58:11) but any true definition of them must include their authority as rulers of the twelve tribes in THE THOUSAND YEAR REIGN, and Judges at THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRIST.
The Apostles are set "first in the church." 1 Corinthians 12:28 They are ranked above the Prophets in rulership over the Church, both of the Israelites and of the Gentile nations. We see their rulership in the early Church revival in Jerusalem where all the wealth of the Church was laid at their feet. (Acts 5:2) We see the early Church remained "stedfast in the Apostle's doctrine." (Acts 2:42) Can there be any doubt a true defintion of the Apostles involves more than saying in the pulpits of the land that anyone "sent" is equal to them? There will be no more Apostles but those twelve who return with Christ in the supernatural Resurrection to establish THE THOUSAND YEAR REIGN in the power of the world to come. May God help you to learn his truth and live it unto the great and awesome day and hour of his second coming. Amen.
Turn off your telephone and all other electronic distraction devices, and in a quiet place; open your King James 1611 and your Young's Concordance to the Word you wish to learn more of remembering God's Word defines itself without designating the definition as you would expect it too from your experiences with dictionaries, Concordances and footnotes in Bible versions. The definition is usually found in verses containing the Word, and if you leave your phone on; sure enough, just as you are about to come to a revelation, the prince of the power of the air will cause someone to interupt and quench the Spirit.
Take each verse under the Word in question and look it up, studying carefully the context in which it is used. Get out a notepad and mark down any patterns or keys to the meaning of the Word you are researching.
If there are any words in a context you do not understand, you may need to do a word study on them also to draw the proper conclusions.
When you have gone through all available verses and have thoroughly examined all of the evidence immediately at hand, you may find it necessary to do other Word studies pertaining to the Word in question. For example, to come to the conclusions presented above inthe study of the Apostles, it was necessary to do a Word study on the Word "sent."
Also, it is important to not become intimidated by the Greek or the Hebrew. You have all of the truth in English inspired by God to the translaters of the sacred King James 1611 Bible. You do not need to get involved in studying Greek and Hebrew to find the deeper meanings. Deeper meanings are found through absolute obedience to what is written on the pages of sacred Scripture in English. The study of languages which change so much no one can agree upon them is foolish. Once you begin, you will be in danger not only of academic pride, but also of becoming trapped behind a desk for the rest of your life researching the meanings of words while those who run THE RACE SET BEFORE THEM are out there on the front lines bearing the cross of the living sacrifice and storing up treasures in heaven. They will know more of the meaning of Biblical meanings of words than ten thousand scholars.
May God bless you. Watch out for academic pride. It seems as though Christians get puffed up really fast these days as soon as they do a little research. The Bible is made of forever spiritually. The Word in it stretches on into the infinity of God's understanding. How is it then you can so quickly become puffed up in egotiscal pride for having studied a little? The path you are on is infinite and you are finite, therefore be humble at all times for the rest of your life. May God help you to see the way "HID IN CHRIST." Amen.
